Heys everyone! Didn’t see anyone who started this. Guess maybe I am the only one who suay suay kana ...

I went to check what I could do when I make most payment and contractors run road. Some possible ways I found online:

1) Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE)

2) Lodging a claim with the Small Claims Tribunals

3) Engaging a Lawyer

I think I gone case liao... but thought to put this up because I think consumers doing renovation are not well protected.

Anyone has faced similar issues?

what did you do to seek legal recourse / compensation. And did it work?

Honestly, nothing much can be done. Most companies are set up to be private limited, so if they "closed down" there is not much recourse that can be done. CASE, tribunal claims all those can try, but it might be an extremely long and painful process.

In a nutshell when it comes to finding reliable IDs, prevention is better than cure. Always read up all their reviews and check their certifications, company history, company age etc.. Even with those it cannot be 100% safe, but at least the probability of getting a bag egg is reduced to a minimum.

Posted this article at another thread: https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/consumer/case-issues-alert-against-renovation-contractor-after-getting-30-complaints

Does not seem that CASE can do much also. My opinion is prevention is the best cure when it comes with dealing with these bad eggs of the industry.

I do know a colleague who ID went bankrupt/insolvent during the renovations. The contractors are also not paid hence they could not continue to work on the house. It was a nightmare. They had to negotiate with the contract and pay them additional fees to at least complete the parts which they were working on. After that they have to hire another ID (luckily this time they did their checks on backgrounds, reviews, certifications etc) to finish up the rest of the home. But as @minionsgang said, prevention is better than cure, this is a hell of an experience I would assure no one would like to go through.

Contractors that actually become insolvent or bankrupt is probably a very small minority. From what my friends say from their experiences, horrible workmanship, disappearance during jobs, and threatening the homeowners is much more common occurrences. You might be the homeowner paying tens of thousands of dollars for your reno but they do not even treat you with the basic respect a customer deserves.
