Hi owners,

My partner and I has just collected our keys to our new BTO. We did a preliminary round of inspection of the unit and it appears to have to quite a lot of defects compared to some of our friends' BTOs which we have visited. We had more than 200 post-it stickers pasted throughout the house for the indicating of the defects.

We are unsure if it is because we are too OCD on the details, or if it is just common HDB practice these days, but it do seemed that the quality has dropped compared to other units which I have visited a couple of years ago.

We have to make an appointment with HDB's contractors within 2 weeks of key collection to rectify these defects. We heard that even through HDB contractors not all the defects can be rectified, some of the defects end up can only be taken care by the ID team.

Any other owners have experiences and thoughts in on this? Especially regarding the high number of defects. We are not sure if our unit/development is a one-off case or its simply quality have dropped.

Hope to hear from all!

Yes, such issues can be very troubling and defects can be more than meets the eye. Its true that the ID can conver up certain defects but there are others that are harder to compensate for. Your ID might even charge you more for the additional touch up work.

As as first time homeowner its understandable to have doubts if you are actually nitpicking or not. One should keep in mind that its normal for defects to be found, as there is no perfect construction even for a new home. If you wish to seek a second opinion, you might consider engaging defects inspections specialists to assess if the defects are superficial that could be let go or there could be others that needs to be addressed before you start your renovation.

An update for the info of future homeowners: HDB did fixed some of the defects after setting up an appointment with their designated contractors.

However they are still not the best at paying attention to details. Some smaller defects still remains. As we are hoping to move in ASAP, we decided to just move ahead and inform our ID about these defects to be rectified as they do the construction.

End to end I would say getting a good quality BTO flat from HDB is a hit or miss. Good luck to all!
